Brunswick GA: Ahmaud Arbery from Georgia was persecuted, shot and killed while jogging more than two months ago, and his family demands justice.
Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was jogging in a neighborhood in Brunswick on February 23 when a man and his son chased him and later told the police that they thought he looked like a suspect in a number of burglaries in the area.
The coroner, Edmund Donoghue, noted cause of death was “multiple shotgun wounds” … and described the manner of death as “homicide.”
Tests also showed Ahmaud had no alcohol or drugs in his system.
Wanda Cooper, Arbery’s mother, told CNN Sunday that when the police informed her of her son’s death, she was told that her son was involved in a break-in and that there was a confrontation between her son and the homeowner and a gun fight gave.
“He wasn’t armed,” said Cooper
She said she never worried that he was jogging because he didn’t bother anyone.
No charges were brought against the father and son involved in the incident, former police officer Gregory McMichael and his son Travis. CNN asked Gregory McMichael for a comment, but he said he would not comment because he was under investigation.
Though he didn’t fire his weapon, Greg McMichael provided cover for his son. He told Glynn County police he recognized Arbery from surveillance video of a break-in at a Satilla Shores home. He did not mention that he had investigated Arbery on a 2018 shoplifting charge. Arbery’s probation — for a gun-related incident while he was still in high school — was revoked.
“This is an ongoing investigation,” the Glynn County Police Department said in a statement on April 28, adding that it “continues to collect information and make it available to the prosecutor who was assigned the case.”
Two prosecutors have withdrawn because of potential conflicts of interest, one of whom wrote that Travis McMichael acted in self-defense and her actions fell under the Georgian law on the arrest of citizens.
– Attorney Lee Merritt, who represents the family, told CNN Sunday: “The decision to rely on the Citizen’s Arrest Act is really a new invention before they simply said it was self-defense.” Merritt says the men are now trying to apply the law to say that they tried to stop a crime.

“Under this law, you have to actually watch the crime or be informed about the crime immediately,” Merritt said. “The only thing they ever said is … Ahmaud stopped by a house under construction and looked through the window. We don’t know if that happened or not, but even if it did, it isn’t Crime that would invoke the citizen’s arrest law that would allow it. “‘We expect action this week’
After the shootout, Gregory McMichael told the police that he had seen the same man “recently” and had his hand in his pants, prompting McMichael to believe that he was armed.
After seeing Michael Jber jogging, McMichael alarmed his 34-year-old son Travis, according to a report by the Glynn County Police.
“Travis, the guy runs down the street, let’s go,” McMichael said according to the report.
The two grabbed a shotgun and pistol and followed Arbery in their truck, the police said. Travis McMichael, the driver, followed Arbery and then tried to cut him off, the report said. Arbery turned and ran in the opposite direction, the police report said.
They chased Arbery to a nearby intersection where they caught up with him, the report said.
“Stop, stop, we want to talk to you,” Gregory McMichael called to Arbery, according to the police report.
Travis McMichael then got out of the truck with the shotgun, the police report said. His father told officials that Arbery “violently attacked” his son, the report said, and they were fighting for the weapon. Travis McMichael fired two shots, the report said, and Arbery fell. Arbery was pronounced dead by a coroner.
At best, the men had the authority to follow Arbery and send law enforcement officers to the place, Merritt said. The emergency calls show that the dispatcher asked the men what Arbery is doing, what is criminal, Merritt said.
“They didn’t answer that. They said, ‘He’s a black man running down our street,'” said Merritt.
Men’s defenders also point to a belief in shoplifting in Arbery’s past.
“The reference to … alleged behavior from high school or shoplifting is absurd and has nothing to do with his murder,” said Merritt.
He told CNN that he and the family are looking for the prosecutor to charge the men involved in Arbery’s shootout.
“We expect action this week,” said Merritt.

Imagine if this video didn’t exist.. they would be sticking to the story that this was a burglary gone wrong and it would have been swept under the rug. How are people like this. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
