The former NBA chief David Stern is dead. Stern died at the age of 77 from the consequences of a cerebral hemorrhage that he had suffered three weeks earlier, the North American professional professional league said on Wednesday.
“Every member of the NBA family has benefited from David’s vision, generosity and inspiration,” said his successor Adam Silver, expressing his “deep condolences”.
Stern led the league for 30 years, during which time the league grew rapidly. He resigned in February 2014 and is succeeded by today’s Commissioner Adam Silver. Stern was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014 and most recently traveled internationally on behalf of the NBA.
