It is with great sadness in our hearts that we, the very closest relatives of Ari Behn, must today announce that he has taken his own life. We ask for respect for our privacy in the future, informs the family via Geir Håkonsund, Ari Behn’s manager and family spokesman, to Dagbladet.
Cause of death
Behn took his own life, according to the family. Here in Norway he is known for his writing and for his art. He was also married to Princess Märtha Louise. They were married from 2002 to 2016. The couple has three children together.
In a statement from the Castle, King Harald and Queen Sonja say the following:
– It is with great sadness the Queen and I have received the message of Ari Behn’s passing. Ari was an important part of our family for many years, and we carry warm, fond memories of him, the statement says.
We are grateful that we got to know him. We grieve that our grandchildren have now lost their beloved father – and have deep compassion for his parents and siblings, who have now lost their beloved son and brother. We pray that Ari’s immediate family will be at ease during this painful time.
The Crown Prince couple has also spoken out. They say the following:
– For us, Ari was a good friend, a dear family member and an amazing uncle, with whom we shared many of life’s small and big moments. It is with great sadness that we have received the message of his passing away. We were all very fond of Ari. Our thoughts go especially to Maud, Leah, Emma, Princess Märtha Louise and Ari’s immediate family.
Carina Scheele Carlsen, the manager of Princess Märtha Louise, says they do not want to comment on the matter at this time. Dagbladet was in contact with Håkonsund on Wednesday evening, which states that he has no further comments on the matter.
The guard at the Palace’s communications department, Sven Gj. Gjeruldsen, informs Dagbladet that no further announcements from the Palace will be made so far than the statements from the royal family which are located on the royal house’s website.
Shortly after the death was announced, condolences and reactions began to emerge on social media. Prime Minister Erna Solberg comes with his deepest compassion for the news.
– I want to express my deepest condolences to Ari Behn’s family, leaving behind his tragic passing away. My thoughts go to everyone who loved him, ”writes Prime Minister Erna Solberg in a message to NTB on Wednesday night.
Per Heimly, who for many years was a close friend of the artist, also made a message. On Facebook, he wrote the following about the shock:
I am in bottomless sadness at having lost my best friend and blood brother Ari Behn today. I am crushed and pray for calm to digest this incredible tragedy that has struck us all. I loved Ari and he will always be by my side, Heimly wrote.
Another responding is Carl-Erik Grimstad:
“This is just sad, and of course his thoughts go to his children and close family,” Carl-Erik Grimstad, parliamentary representative for the Liberal Party and former deputy head of the royal house, told Dagbladet.
Caroline Vagle, royal house expert in See and Hear, takes the death with grief.
– This is an awful sad news, and my thoughts go to his three daughters and the family as a whole. Ari was a warm, talented, colorful man who really left his mark on everyone he met on his way, she says.
