30 years fall of the Berlin Wall: Germany celebrates and remembers

Berlin – Germany celebrates the fall of the wall 30 years ago and commemorates the peaceful revolution. In the capital, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) are expected to attend a central event in the Mauer Memorial on Saturday (10.30 am). In the evening, Steinmeier will be speaking to people at the Brandenburg Gate during a big stage show.

First, the President receives the Presidents of Slovakia, Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary at the Bellevue Palace, before they drive together to the event on the Bernauer Straße. There they will also visit the monument “The crouching, rearing up,” which honors the contribution of the states to the fall of the wall on 9 November 1989.

At the memorial on the former death strip students will also speak according to the Mauer Foundation. In addition, roses are to be put into the hinterland wall for the victims. The Chancellor, who will also speak there, will attend a prayer service in the Chapel of Reconciliation. Then candles are to be kindled in memory of the courageous East German civil rights activists.

Bernauer Straße is considered a symbol of the German division. When the wall was raised in 1961, the street fronted the street to the east, the sidewalk to the west.

With the fall of the Wall, the German division came to an end after more than 28 years. According to scientific findings, at least 140 people died on the wall in Berlin through the GDR border regime. In a study, according to which at least 327 people were killed at the German-German border, doubts had recently come up.
